Authorities still haven’t fully assessed the dangerous conditions the flooding has caused to our roads, highways, and local infrastructure.
Today, the CBC reported that due to the unprecedented amount of rain and widespread flooding here in BC, Premier John Horgan has declared a provincial state of emergency for at least the next two weeks.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also sending in the Canadian Military to help with emergency operations.
Catastrophic flooding hit major BC towns and cities including all of Merritt, Agassiz, the Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford, and parts of the Vancouver Lower Mainland.
In all, more than 20,000 people were forced to evacuate to nearby towns including Hope, Kamloops, and Kelowna.
See the numbers in this CBC article, Historic Flooding in Southern BC.
Know the Dangers
The extent of the flooding has caused significant safety hazards not only for homeowners but also for cleanup crews and volunteers. Even though water levels have begun to drop, thousands of homes are still under water.
If you are a homeowner affected by the flooding, we urge you to keep the following in mind:
- Downed power lines are a high probability and could be quite dangerous.
- Flood waters may also be contaminated with sewage, debris, and hazardous chemicals.
- Flooding can cause serious damage to your home’s electrical wiring, outlets, appliances, circuit panels, transformers, light fixtures, etc.
We urge you, do not attempt to return to your home until authorities have instructed that it is safe to do so.
Hire A Certified Electrician
for Your Home Electrical Safety Inspection
Before you can return home, you may be asked to first have a home electrical safety inspection completed by a licensed electrician. This is for your own safety.
You may need certification to show that your home’s electrical components are safe, working properly, and pose no additional threat.
During the home electrical safety inspection, our certified electricians will evaluate all electrical components including among others:
- Inside and outside electrical outlets and GFCI outlets
- Electrical wiring and switches
- Lighting fixtures, dimmers, and relays
- Electrical appliances
- Smoke alarms and CO detectors
- Circuit breakers and fuse boxes
Our certified electricians can also help you safely set up a portable generator if you have one, until your power is restored.
